Officer run down while laying spike strips to stop 2 vehicles fleeing toward Mexico

A U.S. Border Patrol agent is dead in California after being struck by one of two vehicles fleeing toward the U.S.-Mexico border during a pursuit by law enforcement today.The officer, whose name has not yet been released, was laying spike strips across the road in the Imperial Sand Dunes recreation in the southeast portion of the state at about 9:30 a.m. when he was hit by a Hummer believed to have been driven by smugglers.The Hummer and a Black Ford F-150 pickup truck escaped into Mexico, Supervisory Border Patrol Agent Jeremy Schappell told the Yuma Sun. It is unknown whether the vehicles were carrying drugs or human contraband.”Right now our Mexican liaison unit has contact with the Mexican authorities … try and track these individuals down,” Schappell said.

Witnesses said the two vehicles were being pursued on I-8 between Calexico, Calif., and Yuma, Ariz., when the drivers left the interstate and turned into the dunes, fleeing toward the nearby border.

“It was at the entrance to the Buttercup Recreation Area, where the duners usually park,” Schappell said.

Because of the proximity of interstate and the dune recreational area to the border, the area is popular with smugglers, he said.

“It actually happens quite frequently out here. What they try to do is, they hope to blend in with the usual dune traffic to increase their chances of going undetected,” Schappell said.

Today’s death is the first for an agent in the Yuma sector in over four years, Schappell said.

“It’s not easy. No law enforcement agency wants to lose one of their own. What we’re focusing on now is making sure the agents at the scene are taken care of, mentally. Our primary focus is on the family, helping them cope and deal with their loss.”

First I’d just like to point out that the Arizona Republic is clearly on the “pro-illegal” side of the fence because they are drinking the “undocumented migrant” kool aid. At least these publications are much clearer to pick out now that they have sanitized the word “illegal alien” from their stories. So one doesn’t have to work as hard to figure the slant of a publication when they so willingly bow to the MSM kinder, gentler handling of that nasty harsh phrase - illegal alien. Oh you big meanies that still use that term!

Read the story - and you decide exactly how much “saving” this illegal alien did here.. He gave the kid his jacket and started a bonfire…but had this 9 year old not encountered the “good migrant” - wouldn’t he also have encountered the same hunters at 8am the next morning? I also don’t know too many single illegal aliens crossing the desert… I suspect there were more illegals and this guy just drew the short straw when the rest of the group moved on. I can’t wait for the REAL truth to eventually come out when this 9 year starts talking about it some more. It wouldn’t even surprise me if the 9 year old had been molested overnight… Call me cynical if you want…

File this one under propaganda because this is all part of the new Mexican initiative to paint illegal aliens as “nice” people and victims of the big bad racists. Well we need to do some of our own propaganda… we need to tell some of the stories of people who had to find other ways to work when the illegals came in and stole their livelihood.. or maybe some heart wrenching stories from the families of victims who were raped and murdered by illegal aliens…

Authorities have located a relative of a 9-year-old boy who was rescued from the southern Arizona desert by an undocumented migrant after his mother was killed in a car crash.

Santa Cruz County Sheriff Tony Estrada said Saturday that officials had found the brother of the dead woman in New Mexico, and he was on the way to Arizona to pick up the boy. The boy’s father died about two months ago.

Estrada identified the dead woman as Dawn Alice Tomko, 45, of Rimrock, a small town north of Phoenix. Her son was in the care of state child welfare officials.

The boy, Christopher Buztheitner, was found on Thanksgiving evening wandering in a remote canyon a few miles north of the Mexican border by an immigrant trying to walk into the U.S. The boy led the man back to his mother’s crashed van, Estrada said.

The migrant was identified as Jesus Manuel Cordova, 26, of Magdalena de Kino in the northern Mexican state of Sonora.

The mother and son had been in a remote area northwest of the border town of Nogales, Ariz., on a camping trip, Estrada said. Tomko lost control on a curve Thursday afternoon and the van flew off a cliff, crashing into a canyon. Christopher crawled out and went for help.

Tomko was trapped in the van and still alive when Christopher returned with Cordova, but died soon afterward. Cordova comforted the boy, who was disoriented but unhurt, wrapped him in a jacket and lit a bonfire to keep him warm through the chilly desert night.

About 8 a.m. Friday, Cordova flagged down a group of hunters and they called for help. Cordova surrendered to Border Patrol agents and agreed to be returned to Mexico without going through formal deportation proceedings.

Calls to the Mexican consulates in Nogales and Tucson seeking more information about him Saturday weren’t returned.

Estrada said earlier that Cordova’s actions likely saved the boy and he risked being caught to do what was right. He said it should serve as a reminder that most undocumented migrants are good people.

“They respond where there’s a need,” Estrada said. “We’re very grateful that he was there.”

Nine-year-old who was helped by illegal immigrant is getting out of hospital today.

Christopher Buztheitner, the 9-year-old boy who survived a crash last Thursday that killed his mother in the southern Arizona desert and was rescued by an illegal immigrant, will be released from the hospital today and picked up by his uncle, David Tomko, who lives in the Four Corners area, local officials told ABQjournal.com this morning.

Santa Cruz County (Ariz.) Sheriff Tony Estrada told us that the boy, whose stepfather died about two months ago, will be reunited with his biological father who lives on the East Coast.

Estrada said the boy’s uncle, whose home town he didn’t know, was scheduled to pick up the boy today from the hospital where he was being treated for bruises he suffered when his mother’s van went over a steep cliff in a remote area northwest of Nogales, Ariz.

It was “very fortunate” that the boy’s injuries were not more severe after the van driven by his mother, 45-year-old Dawn Alice Tomko of Rimrock, Ariz., plunged over a 300-foot cliff, Estrada told us.

Umm.. hello journalists? He is NOT an ORPHAN. He has a BIOLOGICAL FATHER WHO IS STILL ALIVE. It was his STEPFATHER who died two months ago.

And.. what exactly IS an “illegal entrant”? Somehow the word “entrant” implies that the person had a right to enter…or.. someone who is entering a contest.. yeah.. like the lottery.. which is exactly what illegal immigration is in this country.. Unbelievable.. how they try to SPIN the illegal alien term. Sickening in fact.

Here is the dictionary.com definition of the word “entrant”:

1. a competitor in a contest.
2. a new member, as of an association or school.
3. a person who enters.

Seems like all these open borders idiots are trying out new terms to soften the phrase “illegal alien”… Let’s just call them what they are - ILLEGAL and ALIEN. No need to change it - I don’t care how NICE they might be…

This is wonderful news and I hope Gilmer continues to talk about this outrageous injustice so we can continue to work to right the wrong committed against Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean. Where is the Hispanic Caucus, La Raza, MalDEF and other “Hispanic support” groups in the case of these men wrongfully accused and imprisoned for doing their job at the border??? Could it be that the loyalty of these groups lies more with Mexico than the US? Where is ‘American Humanity’ NJ blogger on compassion for fellow humans in this case??? I guess Hispanic border agents don’t count when it comes to humanity and justice eh? Hypocrites all of you.

Says Mexican consulate, prosecutor set him up

A former deputy sheriff in Texas, jailed for shooting at a van loaded with illegal aliens whose driver was trying to run him down, has been released from prison and says he was set up by the Mexican consulate and the prosecutor.

Former Deputy Sheriff Gilmer Hernandez was released yesterday from a halfway house, finishing the prison term to which he was sentenced for the shooting incident, in which two fleeing Mexican illegal aliens were wounded. He was in federal prison from Dec. 1, 2006, to Sept. 13, 2007, about 10 and a half months.

While he’s happy to be home, Hernandez feels he suffered an injustice at the hands of the U.S. government, which acted at the direction of the Mexican government.

“The prosecution was not right,” he told WND. “The prosecution used their tactics, which was a bunch of lies, let’s put it that way, I would never have been prosecuted if the Mexican consulate had not demanded it.”

As WND reported earlier, Rocksprings Sheriff Don Letsinger said investigators had no plans to bring charges against Hernandez until the Mexican government intervened and demanded the prosecution.

“Deputy Hernandez had a right to stop that vehicle,” Letsinger told WND. “Can you look at what happened and say that Deputy Hernandez intentionally wanted to injure someone in that vehicle? You cannot. Deputy Hernandez did not want to injure anyone that day. He fired at the tires to stop the vehicle and he was justified in doing so.”

WND also reported the incident was investigated by the Texas Rangers who also did not recommend Hernandez be prosecuted.

“I was doing my job out there,” Hernandez told WND yesterday. “It was a split-second decision and I feared for my life. I discharged my weapon at the tires to stop the van, not to injure anybody. I was trying to save myself and others. The vehicle was trying to run over me and I was concerned innocent people were going to get hurt.”

He served more than seven months, from Dec. 1, 2006, to June 7, 2007, in solitary confinement.

Hernandez was sentenced to one year plus one day in federal prison, even though federal prosecutors had recommended a much more severe seven-year prison term for Hernandez.
