The Truth About Mexican Drug Cartel Weapons - They Don’t Come from the US

April 5th, 2009

Recently we heard quite a few Obama administration officials and Democrats repeating the LIE that “90% of the Mexican Drug Cartel weapons are coming illegally from the United States”. Here is one quote and they apparently cite their source as the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms:

Last week, the Obama administration announced plans to crack down on the smuggling of guns and money pouring south from the United States into Mexico that are helping fuel violence by Mexican drug cartels.

Mexico checks only a fraction of the traffic entering from the United States but has promised to crack down.

Oh really?  And then we have here a quote about the 90% and SURPRISE it came from MEXICO:

On Thursday, Attorney General Eric Holder and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano visit Mexico to discuss ways to stop the smuggling of American weapons, which Mexico says account for 90% of confiscated arms here.

And again we see the blame on the US (totally unfounded by FACTS)  being tossed around by Hillary Clinton:

Our insatiable demand for illegal drugs fuels the drug trade. Our inability to prevent weapons from being illegally smuggled across the border to arm these criminals causes the death of police officers, soldiers and civilians,” Clinton told reporters during her flight to Mexico City.

I suspected all along that if this were true, we should be able to get the serial numbers of all these weapons coming from the United States and somewhere there should be proof of all this right?  Well thank God for Fox News because they dug up some TRUTH.

There’s just one problem with the 90 percent “statistic” and it’s a big one:

It’s just not true.

In fact, it’s not even close. The fact is, only 17 percent of guns found at Mexican crime scenes have been traced to the U.S.

What’s true, an ATF spokeswoman told FOXNews.com, in a clarification of the statistic used by her own agency’s assistant director, “is that over 90 percent of the traced firearms originate from the U.S.”

But a large percentage of the guns recovered in Mexico do not get sent back to the U.S. for tracing, because it is obvious from their markings that they do not come from the U.S.

“Not every weapon seized in Mexico has a serial number on it that would make it traceable, and the U.S. effort to trace weapons really only extends to weapons that have been in the U.S. market,” Matt Allen, special agent of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), told FOX News.

More from this excellent expose from FOX:

A Look at the Numbers

In 2007-2008, according to ATF Special Agent William Newell, Mexico submitted 11,000 guns to the ATF for tracing. Close to 6,000 were successfully traced — and of those, 90 percent — 5,114 to be exact, according to testimony in Congress by William Hoover — were found to have come from the U.S.

But in those same two years, according to the Mexican government, 29,000 guns were recovered at crime scenes.

In other words, 68 percent of the guns that were recovered were never submitted for tracing. And when you weed out the roughly 6,000 guns that could not be traced from the remaining 32 percent, it means 83 percent of the guns found at crime scenes in Mexico could not be traced to the U.S.

So, if not from the U.S., where do they come from? There are a variety of sources:

– The Black Market. Mexico is a virtual arms bazaar, with fragmentation grenades from South Korea, AK-47s from China, and shoulder-fired rocket launchers from Spain, Israel and former Soviet bloc manufacturers.

– Russian crime organizations. Interpol says Russian Mafia groups such as Poldolskaya and Moscow-based Solntsevskaya are actively trafficking drugs and arms in Mexico.

- South America. During the late 1990s, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) established a clandestine arms smuggling and drug trafficking partnership with the Tijuana cartel, according to the Federal Research Division report from the Library of Congress.

– Asia. According to a 2006 Amnesty International Report, China has provided arms to countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Chinese assault weapons and Korean explosives have been recovered in Mexico.

– The Mexican Army. More than 150,000 soldiers deserted in the last six years, according to Mexican Congressman Robert Badillo. Many took their weapons with them, including the standard issue M-16 assault rifle made in Belgium.

– Guatemala. U.S. intelligence agencies say traffickers move immigrants, stolen cars, guns and drugs, including most of America’s cocaine, along the porous Mexican-Guatemalan border. On March 27, La Hora, a Guatemalan newspaper, reported that police seized 500 grenades and a load of AK-47s on the border. Police say the cache was transported by a Mexican drug cartel operating out of Ixcan, a border town.

Believe it or not, you will STILL continue to see this LIE repeated even in the face of the FACTS that say OTHERWISE. When you do see this lie repeated - call them out on it. Don’t let them continue to campaign against the Second Amendment based on these outright LIES coming from Mexico, our neighor… si?

**Update**

Even in the face of clear evidence to the contrary, the Mexican government CONTINUES to assert that it is weapons coming from the United States which are fueling the Mexican Drug Cartel violence.

WASHINGTON – Mexico’s ambassador to the United States says shutting down the flow of money and weapons from the U.S. into Mexico is key to dealing with the violent drug cartels in his country.

Ambassador Arturo Sarukhan says money and guns provide the drug cartels with the means to corrupt, to bribe and to kill.

Mexican authorities maintain that 90 percent of the weapons used by the drug cartels come from the U.S.

Well … this is how the mainstream media FAILS miserably in reporting the truth. Why is there no correction to this OUTRIGHT LIE by Ambassador Sarukhan??? Let me repeart the FACTS from the FOX expose:

In fact, it’s not even close. The fact is, only 17 percent of guns found at Mexican crime scenes have been traced to the U.S.

What’s true, an ATF spokeswoman told FOXNews.com, in a clarification of the statistic used by her own agency’s assistant director, “is that over 90 percent of the traced firearms originate from the U.S.”

But a large percentage of the guns recovered in Mexico do not get sent back to the U.S. for tracing, because it is obvious from their markings that they do not come from the U.S.

Why is this dirtbag allowed to continue to repeat the LIES that most of the guns used by the cartels come from the US and nobody is calling him out on it?  Why is anyone in the US media giving THIS LIAR a voice and quoting his LIES in the media?????   What a surprise from the Associated Press - apparently they are “associated” with our enemies - not our allies. Disgusting!

One Response to “The Truth About Mexican Drug Cartel Weapons - They Don’t Come from the US”

  1. […] Plus, there’s absolutely no truth to the often-repeated lie that 90% of the cartel’s weapons came from the US.  That’s the lie being reinforced by Bambi, Holder, Hillary, and little Dicky.  Here’s the truth- 90% of the firearms the Mexicans turn over to the US for tracing originated here.  But as an overall number, only 17% of the weapons confiscated down there are turned over to us for tracing.  So the real percentage is actually 15.3%.  There’s a nice debunking of that lie here.
