Barack Obama should not be allowed to run for President

October 28th, 2007

A picture is worth a thousand words and in that thousand words are phrases such as “Barack Obama is a traitor”. This is outrageous that a Presidential candidate would so obviously and openly reject the Pledge of Allegiance to the National Anthem of this country (correction update - it was the National Anthem not the Pledge of Allegiance - see below for more on this part) where he wants to become President. He should be run out of this country on a rail if he thinks so little of it. Other words that come to mind to describe Barack Osama are “scumbag” and “terrorist”.

TRAITOR!

Original article attributed to NewsBusters here

Turns out that not wearing a flag lapel pin isn’t the only way Barack Obama chooses to show he’s a different kind of Democrat.

Have a look at the photo from the October 1, 2007 edition of “Time.” It shows Obama, Hillary and Bill Richardson at the Steak Fry of Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) on September 17 in Indianola, IA during [according to the photo caption] the National Anthem. Richardson and Clinton have their hands on their heart. But not Obama. Does he perhaps believe that, like wearing the flag pin, the hand on the heart isn’t “true patriotism”?

“Time” ran the photo without comment. I haven’t seen coverage of this anywhere else in the MSM. Perhaps some enterprising reporter can ask the Illinois senator about his decision to spurn this American tradition.

********* Update *********

Ok so some people misstated the event/picture and said it was the Pledge of Allegiance when it was the National Anthem of the United States that was being played. Here are the words to that anthem.

United States Lyrics of National Anthem:

You take a look at those words and tell me why Barack Obama would decide NOT to show respect to them? Putting your hand over your heart is a sign of allegiance and respect. The POINT is (to some of the commenters here and others) is that it is NOT illegal to NOT put your hand over your heart during the National Anthem.. It is NOT a crime.. it is not “against the law” or any silly thing like that. What it IS, is disrespectful to our country, disrespectful to OUR FOUNDING FATHERS and those who died to preserve the freedoms we enjoy today. It is makes one wonder where Barack Obama loyalties ARE. It is INAPPRORPRIATE for an elected official to not follow customs of the country. It is yet another DISS to our culture, our customs, our heritage .. by an elected official and it is for THAT reason that I believe he should NEVER EVER become the President of this country. He might be more appropriate as the head of a dictatorship like North Korea, Iran or Venezuela. I’m SICK AND TIRED of seeing our heritage, our culture and our values under attack even by the people who hope to be elected to our highest office. It’s an outrage and it is approrpriate to BE outraged. If we don’t care about things like this then we might as well just hand over our country to others who DO care.

If this is true, then Obama is definitely my man. It takes some serious intestinal fortitude for a presidential candidate to take such a controversial stand with serious political ramifications.

For the record, the pledge of allegiance is not part of the Constitution nor do any laws exist obliging citizens to participate in it. The pledge was written in 1892 by a Baptist minister (and did not include the words “under God” at that time) for a youth magazine that had a fundraiser to sell flags. It quickly caught on at the time, it was seen as a way to help encourage unity throughout the nation after the turmoil of the Civil War. It has since become an anachronism that has received unwarranted elevated status in our society. In truth, Pledges are the devices of totalitarian and would-be totalitarian governments, not free societies.

I did some research on the internet and I could not find any articles from major news sites referring to picture or Obama’s stance on the issue. It seems like this is something that the republican party would pick up on in a big way unless they are afraid of it back-firing on them as a racial issue. Pretty much all I found on the internet were blogs bashing Obama calling him things like “traitor”, “scumbag”, “Barack Osama” (???), and “terrorist” (??????!!!). Of course these are the people who would just as quickly cede our freedoms to the next Third Reich as long as they wave the American flag, sing the Star Spangled Banner, and say the pledge of allegiance.

Also, I saw references on the internet that he has refused to wear a flag lapel pin. So, if this is all true, Obama is willing to demonstrate his Constitutional rights by dissenting from the jingoism of symbols and artificial rituals despite the political fallout. Some of the things I have heard from him so far I like, some I do not. But this puts him tops on my list.

This symbolism is very discouraging. We are the “United States” of America. All representatives of our government should be willing to acknowledge the unifying symbols we share (i.e.the Pledge of Allegiance, the American Flag.) I hope Mr. Obama will take the next opportunity he may have to say the “Pledge of Allegiance” to face the American flag with his hand over his heart in the true spirit of “ohana’.

The blind deference to symbolism is what is truly discouraging and actually quite a threat to the continuance of a free society. We show our commitments to a “united” country by living the principles of our Constitution which guarantees each and every person (including elected officials) the right to dissent. We demonstrate our commitment to these principles by acting and expressing ourselves as we see fit so long as it does not harm others or infringe upon their rights. The symbols are superficial only and, for good reason, have no codified protection (check the Constitution to see if you find anything even mentioning the flag). The principles behind the Constitution are what matter, and in this case Obama is a sterling example of them (again, assuming this is not some internet distortion). When you place the symbols over the principles you follow a path that quickly leads to the erosions of freedom.

Ok jk64jk.. so he wasn’t saying the Pledge of Allegiance.. that is a MINOR detail. He was showing DISRESPECT for our National Anthem. Well EXCUUUUUSE ME on being so WRONG that our National Anthem should not MATTER to a PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE. It’s people like YOU who have pushed us to the edge of Politically Correct Insanity and I lump you in with all the other TRAITORS. You would vote for this creep BECAUSE he shows “strength” in your eyes for disrespecting our National Anthem? Boy do YOU have your priorities up your you-know-what!

Hello people…you don’t have to put your hand over your heart when the national anthem is being sung…it’s no disrespect! people need to get a life…really!

During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. — United States Code, Title 36, Chapter 10, Sec. 171

Right on. That’s the law and people need to know it. If someone is unwilling to respect national institutions like the Pledge of Allegiance, the National Anthem, the Star Spangled Banner, and, of course, the Flag, then they should be labeled as traitors and dealt with accordingly. This is the United States of America and if someone wants to disrespect what this country stands for, they have no business here. It is not a matter of freedom, it is a matter of duty. As the president said just recently, we are at war and people need to understand that. It is treason to disrespect this country’s institutions while at war (or any time for that matter). We didn’t kick butt on people like Hussein, Stalin, Ho Chi Minh, and Hitler simply for our health. We did it because we are the biggest and the best and people need to stop their pinko whining and accept that. And if they don’t, some more butt-kicking’s going to follow. Our first step toward freedom is to expunge all the traitors who would disrespect this country in any way. Once that is accomplished, we can move forward with living the free life of the God-fearing citizen who knows his place, walks the straight line, and respects the Pledge and the Flag. Each citizen should be required by law to say the Pledge of Allegiance out loud every day. And if they will not, they won’t be a citizen for long. And the Flag should resume its rightfully revered place next to God and the President at the center of our lives. It is only the heathens, homosexuals, and mongrels that would dissent from this stance, and, in so doing, they are destroying everything that this country stands for.

    Re: Flag Code
The Flag Code describes the “etiquette” surrounding the flag. It’s directives are not required by law and are not punishable. It acts only as a guide that people can elect to follow voluntarily.

Just for the record we don’t have to follow the code however if you don’t believe in this country and what it stands for than LEAVE. I believe anyone you elects this sorry excuse for a wannabe American is even more ignorant than the ones who still believe Mr. Clinton “Did not have sexual relations with that woman” not only does he openly disregaurd and ignore the traditions of this country but he is MUSLIM, I mean hello, Yes I know he goes to a christian church but hey those MUSLIMS that parked the planes in the NO PARKING ZONE just wanted to learn how to fly right they would never LIE to us. Do you think he is stupid enough or thinks we are stupid enough to vote for him if he he says, why yes I am a radical Muslim and I would like to destroy your country, I mean come on I don’t think anyone is that dumb. I guess we will see in 2008 when I am sure a lot of idiots will emerge and Vote for this traitor.

It’s so funny to me how people are jumping on the negative media blitz here without checking facts.

Freedom IS a constitutional right. That freedom doesn’t come with the disclaimer, “Except when the national anthem is being sung or the pledge of allegiance is being recited. Then your freedoms must be thrown out the window and you must comply with what other people want you to do.” Think about that.

There’s also the fact that this ONE photo and ONE video shows Obama without his hand on his heart and there are plenty of others showing him with his hand on his heart. It’s a song, not a pledge. It’s not required by law that he do anything, including have his hand on his heart. It’s only requested as etiquette he face the flag…and since this was a politically inspired steak fry (note: not a political event like a convention), I’m certain there was a flag off to the right of the stage as most of the people on the stage were facing to the right of the stage, as well.

I don’t know how many sporting events ya’ll have been to, but usually, most people in the crowd and even the athletes turn to the flag with their hands at their sides or behind their backs when the national anthem is being sung.

But some of the writers before me on this blog believe that Obama should be asked to leave the country over something like this, something that isn’t illegal and isn’t offensive and isn’t expected of him? Wait, did he kill someone and I didn’t hear about it? We don’t typically send murderers out of this country.

In fact, in this country we’ve elected a president TWICE who has cut funding for education back home while forcefully sending troops to “fight for freedom” (aka, save his oil interests so he can get richer) meanwhile killing and maiming many of our own troops in addition to countless innocent civilians in the middle east. Oh, and when our troops get home with missing limbs and challenges dealing mentally with what they were ordered to do in the line of duty, they are asked to rejoin society yet their veteran benefits are being cut. They cannot return to work the same way they had been able to in the past so they don’t have the same standard of living as they did before they went to “fight for our freedom” in a foreign country that, BTW, didn’t attack us and didn’t have weapons of mass destruction.

The person responsible for posting the original topic with the photo even called Obama a terrorist? Check yourself. You’re way out of line. Last I checked, Osama Bin Laden was a terrorist. Do you think he’s a terrorist and scumbag because he’s black or of a different ethnicity than you? Or because his name isn’t “American” enough like George or Bill or Jimmy? What’s the real issue here? I’m white, but I’ll use the race card on this one. Your comments are not justified, in fact, I’m embarrassed that someone in my country would write that.

Several people have mentioned that there is nothing in the Constitution that requires a person to participate in The National Anthem. There are, however, Federal instructions which give very specific details as to what the appropriate conduct is. (US Code Title 36 Chapter 10, Sections 170-172)
I believe Barack Obama and all other candidates are aware of this and it doesn’t matter which candidate it is. (I think John Edwards was not in compliance either.)
If you support Obama for this weak display of civil disobedience, that is your right. Just remember the people who have fought to obtain, and preserve these rights for you and myself! When you take this for granted to the point I’ve seen lately, you should reconsider where you live. This is a bi-partisian issue and should be addressed by everyone who has the slightest appreciation of being a United States Citizen. Anyone who does not comply should be criticized, and just as our President should be held to higher standards so should anyone who desires to be The President of the United States!

    §170. National anthem; Star-Spangled Banner
The composition consisting of the words and music known as The Star-Spangled Banner is designated the national anthem of the United States of America.

    §171. Conduct during playing
During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should render the military salute at the first note of the anthem and retain this position until the last note. When the flag is not displayed, those present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed there.

§172. Pledge of allegiance to the flag; manner of delivery
The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, ‘I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.’, should be rendered by standing at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. When not in uniform men should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should remain silent, face the flag, and render the military salute.

You guys should do a bit more research, and then attack Obama on actual substance, like his socialized health care system, instead of this sensationalist nonsense.

Obama was asked about the pic, and explained that he was taught by his father to hold his hand over his heart for the pledge, but to sing along with the national anthem.

    http://www.abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory?id=3834553

What’s more, sometimes Obama DOES put his hand over his heart for both pledge and anthem, you can find hordes of pics of him doing so, on the net.

The lapel thing is even more idiotic and hypocritical, since McCain and Romney weren’t wearing a pin during their 2007 campaigns, either.

Ironically, the pledge/anthem nonsense smacks of Hillary Hate Machine techniques. I would not be surprised if she started it…your picking up on it shows that you’re on the wrong side, philosophically…allies with Hillary, not good, issues-based Conservatism.

What is so unpatriotic about a man who is outspoken about being committed and passionate about positive change in America. So he didn’t put his hand over his heart- big deal. It’s not as if he refused to stand then sat there picking his nose or something. This is a poor attempt to discredit the man. I suppose there’s no REAL scandal to focus on so we must be petty. And why do we keep coming back to the Muslim thing? Are people really that stupid? Answer: Yes. So how many of you who “pledge allegiance” actually have done something with this pledge other than put a yellow magnetic ribbon on your car? How many of you have put your money where your mouth is? It’s probably safe to assume most of you have not and yet continue to tout your patriotism and criticize others as not patriotic enough. Personally, I’m more interested in a person’s performance and character rather then what they do during the Pledge of Allegiance. George Bush puts his hand over his heart every time. He is quite patriotic… too bad we can’t elect him one more time. Maybe he could get us out of the mess he started.
